Went in to try out some Lems. I was surprised that being from Des Moines area that Great Outdoor was one of the closest places that carried Lems in stock. The customer service was great and they had what I was looking for. This is a great locally owned store that provides amazing service.

Beautiful store, super friendly and accommodating staff. Always willing to go the extra mile to make sure you’re getting the equipment you need! Plus an option to skip the bag for a donation to local charities.

Look I don't take 5 star reviews lightly. I don't believe in unicorns (but yes to rainbows!) but let's just say they are rare. Well, this one is a no brainer. It starts when you pull up to the store. Even from the outside, it's just warm and cozy with a kind of northwoods lodge feel. Then you walk in the door and feel two things: Welcomed and quality! I was looking for a specific type of jacket/outer layer and DeAnn and her crew went to work. I put them through their paces and they did not flinch! We finally found a Kuhl Outlaw Waxed Jacket that checked off all the boxes. And the more I look at that jacket and the more I wear it, the more I like it! It is quality! The kind of quality that gets better with age. Not saying my kids will fight over it when I'm dead but hey, it's a jacket! Also picked up a Nocs 8x Zoom Tube Monocular that is outstanding! Anyway, I can't say enough good things about the great team at The Great Outdoor Store! Please folks do yourself a favor and visit them and buy some quality merchandise. This level of quality in customer care is becoming as rare as unic... Well it's rare, let me tell you! Thanks for all your help Great Team!

Went here about a year ago with my husband while on a road trip. We ended up falling in love with all things outdoors even more since! At the time a few guys were working there and they were all friendly, extremely helpful, and super laid back. I still think about the store and would like to go back if we travel that way again.

pretty much a bunch of arrogant jerks. Been their 10-15 times in the last 10 year. 0 good experiences. I’m an avid outdoorsman and mountaineer, kids working the counter don’t, know what they are really talking about. I always have cash to blow. won’t spend real money there precisely because they just aren’t very nice folks who think they can see the money in your pocket via the look on your body - not wise. So i take my cash to the REI in the cities, drop 5k-6k once a year. I’d give 1 star BUT, i’ve caught a few great sales over the years.

Great place and friendly helpful staff. We recently got into climbing and needed a harness. They were very helpful in making sure we had the proper fit. They have a great selection and stuff for anyone that enjoys the outdoors.
